The Society of Cosmetic Chemists Educational Program
Program Mission and Philosophy

The Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) Education Program is designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of the science, technology, and art behind cosmetic and personal care product development. Our mission is to foster the next generation of innovative and ethical cosmetic scientists who can navigate the complexities of formulation, safety, and regulation. The program emphasizes a holistic approach, blending theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on experience to prepare graduates for diverse roles within the industry.

Core Curriculum

The curriculum is structured around foundational and advanced topics essential for a successful career in cosmetic science.

  • Introduction to Cosmetic Chemistry: A foundational course covering the history, principles, and key ingredients of cosmetics.
  • Organic and Polymer Chemistry: Focus on the chemical structures and reactions of molecules relevant to cosmetic formulations, including surfactants, emulsifiers, and polymers.
  • Physiology of Skin, Hair, and Nails: A deep dive into the biological functions and anatomy of the target substrates for cosmetic products.
  • Emulsion and Suspension Science: The study of creating stable mixtures of immiscible liquids and solids, which is fundamental to lotions, creams, and makeup.
  • Formulation Principles: Hands-on training in creating various product forms, including serums, sunscreens, shampoos, and color cosmetics.
